Content & Licensing Policy
Who owns what on Polestar, the licenses involved, and what we can host.
In short
- Polestar itself is free software under the GPL-3.0. Its license exception lets you publish a community guide built by its compiler under any license you choose.
- You keep the rights in your guides; your pack.json names their license and players see it on the guide’s page.
- Publish only what you wrote or have the right to share. Don’t copy text from Polestar’s own guides or from other people’s guides without their license allowing it.
- Uploads are guide files, a license and images only. Built addons are scanned for malware before they are published.
1. Polestar’s license
The Polestar addon and its compiler are free software under the GNU General Public License v3.0. Its license exception (Docs › Reference › License exception) lets you publish a community addon built by the compiler, including the reference data the compiler puts in it, under any terms you like.
2. Your guides, your license
Every community guide declares a license in its pack.json (for example CC-BY-4.0, MIT or All rights reserved), shown on its page. That license is between you and the players; the license you give us to host it is in the Terms of Service.
3. What you may publish
Your own work, or work whose license lets you republish it, with the credit it requires. Polestar’s own built-in guides are not covered by the license exception: hand over to one with a `next` step, but don’t copy its text. Game names and data from World of Warcraft are facts the compiler uses; Blizzard’s art and trademarks remain theirs.
4. What we host
An upload may contain pack.json, .guide files, a README, a LICENSE and images. Anything else (scripts, executables, archives inside archives) is refused, and the Lua in a built addon is written by our compiler, not uploaded. Built addons are checked by a malware-scanning service; a build it flags is held from the index until a moderator has looked at it. Images are re-encoded and may be screened before they show.
5. Removal
We may remove content that breaks this policy, the Community Guidelines or the law, as described in Copyright & takedowns.
